Pasadena ice rink
3051 Foothill Boulevard, Pasadena, CA, USA
Located on a former brown field, this project for the city of Pasadena houses complete facilities for two NHL sized ice rinks plus viewing stands for 400 spectators. Due to unusual site constraints, the two rinks had to be located end to end with support program in between. The challenge to create a modulated design into a 500' long building was met with the incorporation of natural lighting in alternating clerestory bay. Combined, with a north facing curtain wall, visitors can skate beneath an expansive view of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Coordinating the complex ice systems while achieving a LEED silver rating, required an innovative approach to numerous building components. Some of these features include heat reclamation, cold storage, and landscape irrigation generated from an ice melt pit. This project is registered with USGBC and was developed as a LEED silver design.
